The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed claims that its National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, is secretly working with the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party described the allegation as baseless and politically motivated, insisting that the former Bayelsa State governor remained committed to the NDC and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, made the clarification in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday in reaction to what he called malicious allegations against Dickson.
Director said Dickson had neither entered into a formal nor informal agreement with the ruling APC, stressing that his decision to remain with the opposition was evidence of his commitment to the NDC.
“Our National Leader, Distinguished Senator Seriake Dickson, is not a front for the ruling APC or anyone else. He has no secret or open deal whatsoever with the ruinous and diabolical APC regime,” he said.
According to the spokesman, Dickson could have chosen to join the APC but instead opted to work with other opposition politicians to build the NDC as an alternative platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said the allegation that Dickson would work against Obi and Kwankwaso was inconsistent with the former governor’s political history and record in public office.
“Anyone who knows Senator Dickson’s public service record, and is in his right senses, will not associate him with any under-the-table arrangement to sabotage his own party and its presidential candidate and running mate, Peter Obi and Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso,” Director said.
The NDC spokesman also cited Dickson’s record during his more than seven years in the Senate, arguing that his interventions on national issues demonstrated a consistent opposition to policies of the current administration.
He said Dickson had remained vocal on issues affecting Nigerians and had shown solidarity with citizens facing worsening economic difficulties.
Director further alleged that the reports linking Dickson to the APC were being circulated by political opponents unsettled by what he described as the growing acceptance of the NDC across the country.
The controversy comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the NDC seeking to consolidate its position as a major opposition platform.
The spokesman urged members and supporters of the party not to be distracted by what he described as unfounded allegations, but to remain focused on the party’s electoral campaign.
“It is wicked, vexatious and mendacious to associate his name with any compromise with the ruling APC and its key drivers,” he said.
Director called on NDC supporters and other stakeholders to work towards victory for Obi, Kwankwaso and candidates contesting the various elective positions on the party’s platform.
“We urge all our teeming supporters, members and well-wishers to remain steadfast, keep their eyes on the ball, and work assiduously for victory for our presidential candidate and his running mate, and indeed all candidates contesting on the platform of the NDC,” he added.
