The campaign for the creation of Anioma State has gained remarkable traction in the National Assembly, with 99 senators throwing their weight behind the proposal, surpassing the constitutional threshold for approval in the upper legislative chamber.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, and 97 other senators have declared support for the initiative, which is being championed by Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta North (APC).

Nwoko, a leading voice in the movement, wrote a letter dated May 27, 2025, to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and all senators, appealing for their backing. He emphasised that Anioma State’s creation is rooted in the ideals of fairness, equity, and balanced development across the federation.

The proposal is encapsulated in Senate Bill 481, which is part of the ongoing constitutional review. With 90 signatures already secured, the bill has cleared the two-thirds majority (67 senators) required to advance state creation in the Senate.

Legislative experts and political observers have described this as a significant milestone, noting that the push for Anioma State enjoys rare bipartisan support and growing national resonance.

Among the prominent senators backing the bill are Abba Patrick Moro, Minority Leader; Adams Oshiomhole, former Edo State governor; Seriake Dickson, former Bayelsa State governor; Orji Uzor Kalu, former Abia State governor; and Victor Umeh, a key Southeast politician.

Others include Gbenga Daniel, former Ogun State governor; Ireti Kingibe, senator representing the FCT; Simon Lalong, former Plateau State governor; and Tony Nwoye of Anambra North.

With momentum building and widespread endorsements pouring in, the Anioma State proposal is now considered one of the most viable state creation efforts in Nigeria’s democratic history.
