Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially resigned from the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi announced his decision on Wednesday at a political gathering held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, where he outlined his vision for a renewed national movement.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi said.“We will resist rigging of the election by every lawful means in 2027.”
The event attracted top ADC leaders, including the party’s national chairman, David Mark, highlighting the strategic importance of Obi’s defection to the party.
A two-term governor of Anambra State, Obi was the Labour Party’s presidential standard-bearer in the 2023 elections, where he emerged as a major opposition figure and mobilised widespread youth support across the country.
His move to the ADC is expected to reshape opposition alignments and intensify political manoeuvring as Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 polls.
