ACF dismisses Obi’s one-term vow as political gimmick

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has dismissed as mere political rhetoric the renewed pledge by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

Speaking on the matter, ACF spokesperson, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, argued that Obi’s promise carries no legal weight, noting that the Nigerian Constitution permits a president to seek two terms in office.

Muhammad-Baba cited past instances, including that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who initially vowed to serve for a single term but eventually contested and won a second.

Obi recently reaffirmed his commitment to a single four-year tenure, insisting that he would not renege on his word. He argued that leaders who serve shorter tenures are often more focused and tend to leave more impactful legacies.

His declaration, however, was met with scepticism in some quarters, prompting the former Anambra governor to restate his position, saying, “My word is my bond.”
