JUST IN: Fubara returns to Port Harcourt after six-month suspension

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Friday arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, two days after President Bola Tinubu lifted the state of emergency and ordered his reinstatement.

His aircraft landed at 11:50 a.m. to a rousing reception from supporters and allies, including former commissioners, ex-council chairmen, and lawmakers loyal to him, who had converged at both the airport and Government House.

Fubara’s return followed Thursday’s failed expectation when thousands of supporters who thronged the Government House were left disappointed after his convoy never appeared. The no-show had stirred fresh doubts about his hold on power.

The governor was suspended on March 18 when Tinubu imposed emergency rule on the state amid a fierce political crisis with his predecessor and now FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Retired naval chief Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed sole administrator during the period.

With the lifting of emergency rule, Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State Assembly are expected to resume office. He is due at the Government House later today to formally return to duty.
