...INEC extends voter registration in Anambra
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has received fresh applications from five political associations seeking registration, raising the total number of groups aspiring to become political parties to 134.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed this in a statement released on Thursday after the Commission’s meeting in Abuja.
Olumekun also announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State, which was set to conclude on Thursday, has been extended by three days following appeals from stakeholders.
“The Commission is encouraged by the impressive turnout and peaceful conduct of registrants across the 326 centres in Anambra State. As of Wednesday, 16th July 2025, we have registered 96,085 new voters within nine days, averaging over 10,600 registrations per day.
“Additionally, 12,595 voters requested transfers of their registration, while 7,061 applied for updates or replacement of damaged and lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“Although the CVR was scheduled to end today, we have decided to extend the exercise by three more days in response to public appeals. It will now end on Sunday, 20th July 2025,” Olumekun said.
According to him, women account for 56,017 (58%) of the newly registered voters, while young people aged 18 to 34 make up 50,429 (52.48%).
On party registration, Olumekun explained that the Commission has now received 134 applications from associations aspiring to become political parties. “The names, acronyms, logos, addresses and interim leadership details of these new associations have been published on the INEC website and other official channels for public scrutiny,” he stated.
