Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has declared that all lawful means will be deployed to stop President Bola Tinubu from securing a second term in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels Television, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to democratic and legal processes in the quest to bring about political change in Nigeria.
“We’re going to ensure that we remove Tinubu’s government by all lawful means,” Obi said. “I will govern within the law, bring civility to governance, and appoint competent individuals into office. I will not double as the Minister of Petroleum.”
Obi also addressed concerns about his involvement in a new coalition of opposition political parties, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its common platform ahead of the 2027 polls. He dismissed suggestions that his participation signified disloyalty to the Labour Party.
Clarifying the rationale behind working with a diverse group of politicians—some of whom are viewed as remnants of previous administrations—Obi said experience, even from failure, is an asset in governance.
“In fact, some people who have served in past governments bring critical experience,” he noted. “One of the world’s top companies once hired individuals from failed firms just so they could understand what went wrong. We need people who understand both success and failure to move forward.”
Obi maintained that effective leadership requires inclusion, stressing the importance of embracing all Nigerians regardless of political background.
“The job of a leader is to drive change—and to do that, you need everyone,” he added. “If you want to serve, you must serve everybody.”
