Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Borno State, particularly in the Marte area, calling for swift federal action to prevent further bloodshed and displacement.

Obi, in a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, commended Governor Babagana Zulum for his courageous decision to relocate to the troubled area, describing it as a rare act of leadership.

“The security situation in Borno State is very unsettling,” Obi said. “What is happening in the Marte area is not just a local emergency; it is a national alarm bell that must not be ignored.”

He noted that over 300 communities are at risk and more than 20,000 people have been displaced as insurgents regroup around the Lake Chad basin and Mandara Hills. Obi warned that delaying federal intervention could lead to the collapse of entire local governments.

“Governor Zulum, by spending the night in a town under threat, has demonstrated leadership that is present, proactive, and people-centered,” he said.

Obi urged the federal government to act with urgency by reinforcing security in the region and supporting displaced citizens, saying anything less would amount to failure.

“Our leaders must match words with decisive action,” he added. “If we fail to protect Borno, we fail the idea of Nigeria itself.”

Obi praised Zulum’s compassion and courage, urging national leaders to do the same and prioritize the safety and dignity of every Nigerian, regardless of location.

“This is not about politics. It is about people. It is about protecting the soul of our nation. A new Nigeria is POssible,” Obi concluded.
