Supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were reportedly attacked by suspected thugs during a campaign activity in Warri, Delta State.
The incident was reported by Esther Umoh, a photographer associated with Obi, who alleged that the supporters were attacked by politically sponsored thugs while campaigning in the city.
Umoh said the alleged attackers went after members of the entourage of the NDC governorship candidate in Delta State, as well as other supporters of the Obidient and Kwankwasiya movements.
In a post on X, she alleged that the attackers opened fire on members of the campaign team.
“As of this morning, politically sponsored thugs reportedly opened fire on @MamaPee__, @Drmopaul, @dchrisiyovwaye, the Delta State governorship candidate, members of his entourage, and other Obidient and Kwankwasiya supporters who were out campaigning in Warri,” she wrote.
A video shared alongside the allegation showed a disorderly scene, with a voice apparently from one of the campaigners accusing the suspected attackers of being thugs.
“Look at the thugs, they came to attack us. We must face them. We are fully ready for them,” the voice said.
In another post, Umoh claimed that members of the public later confronted and resisted the alleged attackers.
She, however, said one of Obi’s supporters sustained a gunshot injury during the incident.
“The thugs were resisted by the people, although one of us had been shot at and injured. We will not cower. Nigeria must be OK,” Umoh stated.
The claims could not be independently verified, and details surrounding the alleged shooting, including the identity of the attackers and the condition of the injured supporter, were not immediately established.
The reported incident occurred against the backdrop of growing political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso stepping up activities across the country.
The two politicians are currently being mobilised under the NDC platform, while their support base includes the Obidient and Kwankwasiya movements.
The Obi-Kwankwaso support movement recently announced a 59-member presidential campaign council comprising coordinators and directors drawn from different parts of the country.
