Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has hinted at supporting a broad political coalition—within or outside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—to safeguard Nigeria’s unity, security, and future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to journalists in Kano on Tuesday, Lamido said the country’s dire challenges demand collective action that transcends party lines.

“I believe in Nigeria. So any arrangement, be it within or outside the PDP, that will secure and save Nigeria, I am ready to work with it in 2027,” he declared.

While dismissing rumours that he may defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Lamido admitted the PDP is struggling but insisted he remains rooted in the party that shaped his political life.

“I’m still in the PDP, even though PDP has some problems. I cannot renounce my history, my legacy, or my heritage. The PDP gave me the platform to serve as Minister of Foreign Affairs and as governor of Jigawa. I cannot just discard that and embrace a smaller skin called ADC,” he said.

Lamido’s statement comes amid growing momentum among opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, who are exploring a united front under new platforms like the ADC to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting to the ongoing clamour for new states, Lamido dismissed the idea as a diversion from Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

“Will the creation of new states solve our problems— insecurity, poverty, hunger, and the widening divisions between North and South? We must confront the real issues first,” he stressed.

On Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso’s recent visit to President Bola Tinubu, Lamido said the meeting was within Kwankwaso’s rights but warned that opposition leaders must focus on the bigger picture—rescuing Nigeria from economic decline and political instability.
