Sen. Okey Ezea of Enugu North Dies at 62 While Receiving Treatment in UK

Senator Okey Ezea, the Labour Party lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District, has passed away in the United Kingdom, where he was receiving medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

Ezea, 62, was the only remaining member of the National Assembly from Enugu State. He had previously sought medical care in Germany before travelling to the UK.

The news was confirmed by popular media personality Chijinkem Ugwuanyi on Facebook, who wrote: “Sad News. Senator Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North, is dead… Rest in Peace.”

Born on August 11, 1963, in Enugu State, Ezea attended Community Primary School, Umachi, and Nsukka High School before studying Political Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He later earned LL.B and LL.M degrees in Law from the University of Lagos.

Ezea began his career in the Nigerian Customs Service, rising to the rank of Deputy Superintendent before retiring in 1994. He subsequently founded multiple businesses, including Ideke Shipping Limited, Ideke Engineering Limited, Ideke Overseas Limited, Damik Ventures, and Damik Security Limited.

His political career was extensive. He ran for governor of Enugu State in 2007 under the Labour Party, co-founded the All Progressives Congress in Enugu in 2013, and was appointed Chairman of the Federal Medical Center, Jalingo, by President Muhammadu Buhari. He resigned in 2022 to join the Labour Party and was elected to the Senate in February 2023.

Ezea’s death has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, constituents, and well-wishers mourning the loss of a prominent politician and public servant.
