2027: Opposition agrees to field single presidential candidate

Nigeria’s opposition parties have taken a decisive step toward political consolidation, agreeing to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The breakthrough decision was reached on Saturday at a high-level summit of opposition leaders held in Ibadan, where key political actors gathered to forge a common front amid growing national challenges.

The meeting, chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, drew participants from major opposition platforms, including the Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress and New Nigeria Peoples Party, as well as other stakeholders.

Tagged “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” the summit was convened against the backdrop of worsening economic conditions, security concerns and increasing calls for a stronger alternative political direction.

Among the prominent attendees were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, all widely regarded as central figures in the opposition’s evolving calculations.

The summit was hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, with other political figures including former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal and Labour Party chieftain Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour also in attendance.
