The political succession race in Lagos State has gathered momentum after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

The endorsement followed a strategic closed-door meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally notified top government officials and party leaders of his intention to contest the state’s top office.

With the governor’s backing, Hamzat’s candidacy now appears to have gained early establishment support, positioning him as a frontrunner in what is expected to be a keenly contested race.

The meeting drew influential figures within the state’s political structure, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council such as Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, highlighting the level of consultation preceding the announcement.

Addressing journalists afterward, Sanwo-Olu said the decision to back his deputy was reached collectively, describing it as a consensus among key stakeholders.

“He came to formally inform us of his ambition, accompanied by respected leaders of our party. After deliberations, it was unanimous that he is qualified and prepared for the responsibility,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised Hamzat’s extensive experience in governance, pointing to their close working relationship over the past seven years as evidence of his readiness.

“He understands the system, he knows the workings of government, and he has demonstrated loyalty, integrity, and commitment throughout our time together,” he added.

The governor also acknowledged the influence of Bola Tinubu in shaping the leadership trajectory in the state, crediting him with laying the foundation for both his administration and Hamzat’s emergence.

“We appreciate our leader, Mr President, whose vision has guided many of us and continues to reflect in the leadership we are building,” he said.

Reaffirming his position, Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as a natural successor who has long been groomed for leadership.

“He is not just a deputy governor in title; he has been prepared for this role from the outset. We believe he has what it takes to lead Lagos forward,” he stated.

He further noted that the endorsement followed wide-ranging consultations within the party and government, describing the process as inclusive and aligned with the collective interest of stakeholders.

“This was not a unilateral decision. It was a family discussion, and the outcome reflects the shared confidence we all have in him,” the governor said.
