Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has extended warm birthday wishes to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf on his 63rd birthday, even as rumours swirl about a possible defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement on Tuesday, Kwankwaso reflected on Yusuf’s long political journey alongside him, noting the governor’s service in key roles over the years. Yusuf was Kwankwaso’s personal assistant during his first gubernatorial term and later served as a minister, principal private assistant, and commissioner during his second term, before eventually becoming governor.
“I reflect on the many years of our shared political journey… through which he contributed to the vision and programmes we pursued for the development of Kano State,” Kwankwaso said. He prayed for wisdom, good health, and “clarity of purpose” for Yusuf in the year ahead.
The message comes amid reports that Yusuf, the NNPP’s only elected governor, may be weighing a move to the APC, potentially without Kwankwaso’s endorsement. The former governor has previously stated that he would only consider switching parties if offered a presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
Kwankwaso’s birthday wishes are being interpreted as both a personal tribute and a reminder of loyalty within the party as political manoeuvres ahead of the 2027 elections intensify.
