Prominent activist and political advocate, Aisha Yesufu has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general election.

Yesufu, a close ally of Peter Obi, announced her withdrawal on Friday, revealing that the party had decided not to conduct primary elections for the FCT Senate position.

The activist had only recently joined the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where she said she gained valuable political and leadership experience.

She formally declared her interest in the FCT senatorial contest on May 6, promising to offer what she described as people-focused representation.

However, speculation had emerged within the party over plans to hand the ticket to another aspirant, Amanda Pam, who was reportedly already established within the NDC before Yesufu’s defection.

Confirming the latest development in a statement, Yesufu said the party would instead conduct primaries for House of Representatives positions in the FCT.

“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!” she stated.

Although she did not directly explain the circumstances surrounding the decision, political observers believe the development may be linked to internal party arrangements ahead of the 2027 polls.

Yesufu remains one of Nigeria’s most outspoken social commentators and democracy advocates, known for her active role in civic movements and support for political reforms.
