Momentum for the creation of Anioma State has gained significant traction as 79 senators of the 10th National Assembly have formally endorsed the proposal by signing in support of the initiative.
This strong legislative backing adds to the growing nationwide campaign for the new state, which is proposed to be carved out of Delta State.
Indications suggest that more lawmakers are expected to append their signatures in the coming weeks, further strengthening the push for Anioma State’s recognition as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
In a parallel development, traditional rulers from the South-East geopolitical zone have also declared their full support for the state’s creation, underscoring what is now being described as a growing national consensus.
The endorsements follow a letter written and personally delivered to each senator by Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District and is the lead proponent of the initiative. The letter, dated May 27, 2025, and addressed to the Senate President and all members of the Senate, was made available to South East PUNCH.
Senator Nwoko, through Senate Bill 481, has been spearheading the legislative drive to enshrine Anioma State in Nigeria’s constitution. He argued that the move is not just a matter of political restructuring, but a necessary step towards national development, equity, and justice.
In the letter titled “Anioma as Equity State,” Nwoko appealed to his colleagues to act with courage and vision, stating, “Let us be remembered as the Senate that brought balance to Nigeria’s state structure and healed a longstanding national wound.”
He noted that while other geopolitical zones have six or seven states, the South-East remains disadvantaged with only five. Creating Anioma State, he said, would correct this imbalance and give the Igbo nation a stronger voice in national affairs.
“Anioma, with its deep cultural and historical ties to the South-East, represents a just and logical solution to Nigeria’s uneven federal structure,” Nwoko asserted.
In a show of solidarity, the Ndigbo Progressive Traditional Rulers Forum (NPTRF) also expressed strong backing for the proposal. In a letter dated May 15, 2025, signed by its Chairman, HRM Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu (Oroko Abia), and Secretary, HRM Igwe Sunny Orah, the monarchs commended Senator Nwoko for his bold leadership.
“Your vision, passion, and courage in championing this noble cause resonate deeply with our mission as traditional rulers to uphold unity and fairness among all Igbo people,” the letter stated.
The Forum pledged to lend its royal voice and influence to the cause and work closely with Nwoko in advancing the campaign.
“We are proud to identify with you in this historic endeavour and formally declare our support for the creation of Anioma State,” the monarchs affirmed
