Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will consult widely before deciding whether to join the 2027 presidential race, as pressure mounts from youth groups urging him to return to active politics.
Jonathan made the remarks on Thursday in Abuja while receiving delegations of youth organisations who visited him to press for his participation in the next general election.
He, however, cautioned that the presidential contest is a serious national responsibility that should not be approached lightly.
“You are asking me to come and contest the next election. Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely,” he said.
Jonathan commended the youths for their engagement in national issues, stressing that civic participation and patriotism remain critical to democratic development.
He also reiterated that peace and credible elections are essential for sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
“The key thing we need in this country is peace. You must continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections because without them, many competent citizens will stay away from politics,” he said.
Expressing concern over voter apathy, the former president said Nigeria continues to record low turnout during elections compared to other countries where he has observed electoral processes.
“I’ve observed elections in several African countries and Southeast Asia, and Nigeria records one of the lowest voter turnouts,” he noted.
Jonathan urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the causes of low participation and work towards improving voter engagement.
He also challenged young Nigerians to become more active in the democratic process by registering and voting during elections.
“If I ask how many of you have voter cards, probably half of you do not have them. Yet you want me to contest. You must participate in the electoral process,” he told the youths.
The former president further lamented the negative perception of Nigerians abroad, attributing it to governance challenges over the years.
“The level of disdain shown to Nigerian youths abroad has to stop,” he said.
While he stopped short of declaring any intention to run, Jonathan maintained that he would continue consultations before taking a final decision on the 2027 presidential election.
“I cannot just wake up and say I want to be president again. I will consult before making any decision,” he added.
