Donald Trump, United States President, on Wednesday renewed his insistence that American control of Greenland is crucial to U.S. national security, describing the Arctic island as central to his proposed Golden Dome air and missile defence system.

Writing on social media, Trump said Greenland’s strategic location made it indispensable to Washington’s defence plans. “The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building,” he said, adding that NATO would be “far more formidable and effective” if the island were under U.S. control.

The president argued that the Western alliance should take the lead in building the multi-layer missile defence shield, warning that failure to do so could allow rivals such as Russia or China to move first.

Trump’s remarks came on a day when senior Danish and Greenlandic officials were scheduled to meet U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House for talks on Greenland and Arctic security.

Ahead of the meeting, Denmark sought to calm tensions, with Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen saying Copenhagen was increasing its military presence in Greenland and holding discussions with allies on expanding NATO’s footprint in the Arctic.

Trump has repeatedly raised the prospect of the United States taking control of Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, citing its strategic importance in the Arctic. His comments have continued to unsettle allies and fuel debate over sovereignty and security in the region.
