Prominent Nigerians on Wednesday gathered in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the death of Nigeria's first military Head of State, Major-General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, with renewed calls for national unity, justice and selfless leadership.
The memorial ceremony, organised by the Abia State Government in conjunction with the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, attracted serving and retired military officers, diplomats, traditional rulers, religious leaders, government officials and business executives.
President Bola Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), while former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), sent a representative. Former President Goodluck Jonathan was represented by his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.
Activities marking the occasion began with prayers and the reconsecration of Aguiyi-Ironsi's tomb at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre by the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, alongside clerics from other Christian denominations.
This was followed by the laying of wreaths by the President's representative, Governor Alex Otti, a representative of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dame Patience Jonathan and other dignitaries.
In his address, President Tinubu described the late military leader as an accomplished soldier and patriot whose service to Nigeria was defined by courage, discipline and an unwavering commitment to national unity.
Represented by the Defence Minister, the President noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi assumed leadership during one of the country's most difficult political periods and worked to preserve the unity and stability of the nation despite the enormous challenges confronting it.
He said the late Head of State's enduring values of patriotism, discipline, integrity and selfless service should continue to inspire Nigerians in the task of nation-building.
The President also urged citizens to embrace the country's diversity as a source of strength and commended Governor Alex Otti for what he described as purposeful leadership and developmental strides in Abia State.
Speaking at the event, Governor Otti said the life and death of Aguiyi-Ironsi represented the highest form of sacrifice in service to the nation, stressing that Nigeria would achieve greater progress through unity rather than division.
According to him, the late military leader's example should inspire leaders to place national interest above personal or sectional considerations.
The governor said his administration remained committed to meritocracy, explaining that appointments into strategic positions in Abia State were based on competence, integrity and capacity rather than ethnic or geographical considerations.
He pointed to the appointment of an indigene of Edo State as the state's Head of Service as evidence of his government's commitment to inclusiveness and equal opportunity.
Otti also paid tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his support and leadership, announcing that Abia State would participate in activities marking Obasanjo's 90th birthday in March 2027.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), and Dame Patience Jonathan, in separate goodwill messages, described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a national hero whose sacrifice for Nigeria deserved to be remembered by future generations.
They commended Governor Otti for sustaining initiatives that preserve the nation's history and promote peace and national cohesion.
Presenting the citation of the late military ruler, his daughter, Mrs Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi, said the memorial was intended not only to honour her father's memory but also to challenge contemporary leaders to embrace justice, accountability and patriotic service.
She described the ceremony as a solemn reflection on the personal sacrifices made by Aguiyi-Ironsi in pursuit of a united Nigeria.
"This gathering is not merely about observing tradition or performing ceremonial rites. We are not here to reopen old wounds or dwell on historical divisions.
"Rather, this commemoration is both a tribute to his personal sacrifice and steadfast commitment to one united Nigeria and a call on present and future leaders to build a nation founded on justice, accountability, discipline and the collective good," she said.
In his vote of thanks, the late leader's eldest son and former Minister of Defence, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, Governor Otti and all guests who attended the memorial.
He praised Governor Otti's administration for its developmental achievements and expressed confidence that the governor had earned the support of the people for another term in office.
