Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has stressed the need for competent, accountable and compassionate leadership to harness Nigeria’s vast potential and drive sustainable national development.

Obi made the remarks after participating in a roundtable discussion on Nigeria’s future held in Berlin, Germany, and organised by the European Council on Foreign Relations.

In a post shared on his official X account on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor said the forum, themed “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” provided an opportunity to discuss the country’s democratic evolution, development prospects, international relations and ways of deepening bilateral partnerships to boost economic growth.

According to him, participants at the event demonstrated a keen interest in Nigeria’s future and the steps required to place the country on a path of progress and stability.

Obi maintained that Nigeria is richly endowed with both human and natural resources and possesses all it needs to emerge as a prosperous and globally competitive nation.

He, however, argued that achieving such a vision would depend largely on the quality of leadership and governance.

The NDC presidential candidate said the country needs leaders who are committed to investing in education, healthcare, enterprise development, the rule of law and strong institutions rather than what he described as a culture of consumption.

Obi further noted that Nigeria’s future could be transformed through deliberate policy choices that encourage productivity, reduce poverty and promote national unity.

He emphasised the importance of good governance, fiscal discipline and productive engagement with international partners as key ingredients for building an inclusive economy and restoring Nigeria’s standing in the global community.

The former governor disclosed that the event attracted policymakers, diplomats, business executives, development professionals, representatives of international organisations and members of the media, who exchanged views on Nigeria’s prospects and role in global affairs.

He also expressed gratitude to the European Council on Foreign Relations for the invitation, noting that such platforms provide valuable opportunities to strengthen international cooperation and foster mutually beneficial partnerships.
