The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, citing allegations of gross misconduct against him and his deputy.

The process kicked off during Thursday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule. Assembly leader Major Jack formally read out the charges, which were signed by 26 lawmakers. Amaewhule stated that the official notice of gross misconduct would be served on Governor Fubara within seven days.

The proceedings come amid heightened political tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who is reported to be closely monitoring the developments at the assembly complex.

The conflict traces back to December 5, 2025, when a group of Rivers lawmakers led by Amaewhule defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move Fubara later formalised.

Despite the party realignments, hostilities between Fubara and Wike have continued, particularly following the March 2025 declaration of emergency rule in the state. Many lawmakers remain loyal to Wike, highlighting the political divide driving the impeachment initiative.
