Nigerian Army denies mutiny claims, calls report “false and misleading”

The Nigerian Army has dismissed as unfounded and sensational an online report claiming soldiers were threatening mutiny over salary and allowance disputes.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Army described the allegations published by Sahara Reporters as false and aimed at undermining public confidence and national security. The statement was signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations.

The Army said the report was based on anonymous, unverifiable claims circulated through unofficial channels and stressed that such narratives do not represent the views or conduct of Nigerian Army personnel.

“At no time has there been any threat of mutiny within the Nigerian Army,” the statement said, adding that mutiny is a serious offence under military law and inconsistent with the discipline and professionalism of the force.

It noted that soldiers are trained to use established military procedures to address grievances rather than resorting to public platforms. The Army also clarified that promotion increments are only one part of military remuneration and should not be misrepresented as the total earnings of personnel.

“Military pay comprises consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, field and hardship allowances and other entitlements that vary by deployment, qualification and responsibilities,” the statement said.

The Army reiterated its commitment to troop welfare and said reforms are being implemented in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities. These reforms include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care, and insurance packages for troops and their families.

The statement also said the Chief of Army Staff has initiated engagements with appropriate authorities on welfare issues since assuming office, with positive outcomes already emerging.

The Army further defended the Federal Government’s commitment to the military, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has continued to support the welfare and operational effectiveness of the armed forces amid evolving security challenges.

The statement urged the public to disregard the report and rely on official communication channels for accurate information on the Nigerian Army.

It concluded by affirming that the Army remains cohesive, disciplined and focused on its constitutional duties, warning that attempts to portray the institution as unstable are irresponsible and detrimental to national security.
