A popular Anambra comedian and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as ‘Aiza Nwosu’, and another unidentified man have been shot dead by suspected gunmen in separate locations in Awka, the state capital.
The attacks occurred on Sunday night, August 30, 2026, throwing residents into panic as gunshots reportedly rang out in parts of the city.
Nwosu was killed along S.M. Okeke Street in the Amaikwo area of Awka, while the second victim was shot along Capital City Road, Amaenyi.
Although the motive for the attacks had yet to be established, residents and eyewitnesses speculated that the killings might be connected to cult-related activities.
An eyewitness who spoke about the attack on Nwosu said the assailants, reportedly numbering three, followed the comedian from his residence before intercepting his vehicle.
“The assailants, numbering about three and driving in a tinted vehicle, trailed the comedian from his home, double-crossed his vehicle and later attacked him, shooting him dead. They left the victim in a pool of blood inside his car,” the eyewitness said.
The witness alleged that after killing Nwosu, the attackers drove some distance before shooting another man by the roadside and dispossessing him of his belongings.
“As they drove some distance away, they also shot another victim dead by the roadside, dispossessed him of his belongings and fled,” the witness added.
According to the eyewitness, the assailants fired several shots into the air as they fled, heightening tension in the neighbourhood.
“The assailants fired some shots into the air before leaving the scene in a commando-like manner, thereby creating tension in the area. After they left, the security operatives arrived at the scene and recovered the lifeless bodies of the victims,” the eyewitness said.
Security personnel subsequently increased their presence around the affected areas.
Videos circulating online also appeared to show the bodies of the two victims lying in pools of blood at the separate locations, with residents gathered around the scenes.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had launched an investigation and intensified efforts to arrest those responsible.
In a statement, Ikenga said the attacks involved three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla whose registration number was yet to be established.
“The Anambra State Police Command has condemned in the strongest terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka, the State capital, on Sunday, August 30, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons,” the statement said.
The police spokesman said the command had intensified its manhunt for the perpetrators while appealing to residents to provide information that could assist the investigation.
“Information gathered so far reveals that three unidentified persons, travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, with registration number yet to be ascertained, reportedly shot two persons at separate locations within Awka,” he said.
Ikenga said security operatives were immediately deployed to the affected areas after receiving distress calls.
“Upon arrival at the scenes, the operatives recovered the bodies of the victims along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively,” he said.
The victims were taken to a hospital, where medical personnel subsequently confirmed them dead.
The police said one of the victims remained unidentified, while the second was identified as Isaac Nwosu, also known as ‘Azia’.
Items recovered from the scene included N7,550 cash, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, condemned the killings, describing them as unacceptable and a direct threat to the peace and security of the state.
Ama directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
He also ordered intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring areas.
The police appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and others who may have witnessed the attacks or possess credible information about the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the operation to contact the command.
The statement assured members of the public that such information would be treated confidentially.
The command also stressed the importance of community cooperation in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators and preventing further attacks in the state.
Meanwhile, the identity of the second victim and the motive for the killings remained unknown as of Monday, while police investigations and the manhunt for the suspects continued.
