Principal, four students, NECO official abducted in Kogi school attack

Panic gripped Odo-Ekina community in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State on Tuesday after suspected gunmen invaded Government Secondary School and abducted the school principal, four students and a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc staff member during an ongoing examination.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday, saying the attack took place at about 5:25 p.m. while candidates were writing their NECO papers.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the command said security operatives swiftly mobilised to the area and commenced a rescue operation aimed at tracking down the attackers and securing the release of the victims.

The police disclosed that one of the abducted students had been rescued, while efforts were being intensified to free the remaining captives.

According to the statement, a combined team of security personnel is currently combing the surrounding areas and pursuing the kidnappers.

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, was also said to be heading to the scene alongside the Brigade Commander and the state’s Security Adviser to conduct an on-the-spot assessment and coordinate ongoing security efforts.

The command assured residents that all necessary measures were being taken to rescue the victims unharmed and apprehend those behind the attack.

Police authorities added that further information would be released as investigations progress and more details become available.
