The Senate on Thursday approved a total budgetary allocation of N403.1 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years to support police operations, infrastructure development and personnel training.
The approved appropriation consists of N170.1 billion for the 2025 financial year and N233.96 billion for 2026.
The upper chamber granted the approval after considering a report submitted by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs and presented by the committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde (Oyo Central), on behalf of the Chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Madori (Jigawa East).
The committee said the funds would be deployed to critical areas of policing, including the procurement of operational vehicles and equipment, rehabilitation of police barracks and stations, and the training and retraining of officers to enhance service delivery.
A breakdown of the 2026 budget shows that N222.89 billion was approved for capital expenditure, comprising N43.78 billion for capital projects and N179.11 billion allocated to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the Police Trust Fund Headquarters.
The recurrent component of the 2026 budget stands at N11.07 billion, made up of N1.86 billion for personnel costs and N9.21 billion for overhead expenses.
According to the committee, funding for the 2026 budget will be sourced from statutory revenue channels, including 0.5 per cent of revenue accruing to the Federation Account, 0.5 per cent of Value Added Tax collections, 0.05 per cent of the net profits of companies operating in Nigeria, as well as grants, donations and other approved sources.
For the 2025 fiscal year, the Senate approved N159.74 billion for capital projects. Of this amount, N132.45 billion is earmarked for projects involving the Nigeria Police Force, while N27.29 billion is allocated to the Police Trust Fund Headquarters.
The 2025 recurrent budget was put at N10.36 billion, comprising N1.82 billion for personnel costs and N8.54 billion for overhead expenditure.
The committee noted that financing for the 2025 budget would come from the same statutory sources, including VAT receipts, allocations from the Federation Account and contributions from corporate profits.
Presenting the report, Senator Akintunde said the committee was satisfied that the proposed expenditures aligned with the core mandate of the Trust Fund and would contribute significantly to strengthening internal security.
He said the panel recommended that the Trust Fund focus on projects that improve operational readiness, personnel welfare, infrastructure and professional development within the Nigeria Police Force.
The committee also urged the agency to strengthen oversight, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure efficient utilisation of resources and timely delivery of projects.
Senators further emphasised the need for prompt implementation of the approved budgets, noting that improved funding of the Trust Fund remains critical to ongoing efforts to modernise policing and enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies to tackle security challenges across the country.
