Troops of the Nigerian Army have made a grim discovery in a forest in Imo State, recovering suspected human remains believed to be those of a soldier couple abducted and killed in 2022.
The remains were uncovered during a clearance operation targeting a camp linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, along the Ubaha-Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area.
Military authorities said the operation, carried out on April 24, followed intelligence reports pointing to the location of a key hideout and possible burial sites linked to the killing of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew.
The two personnel were abducted in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding, in a case that drew widespread attention and condemnation.
According to the army, troops advancing into the forest encountered armed resistance, coming under attack from suspected fighters operating from the camp.
Despite the ambush, the soldiers engaged the attackers and forced them to retreat after what was described as a decisive confrontation.
The army said the fleeing fighters abandoned the camp, allowing troops to secure the area and begin a systematic search.
During the sweep, soldiers discovered shallow graves concealed within the camp’s vicinity. The graves were excavated, leading to the recovery of remains suspected to belong to the missing personnel.
The military described the find as both painful and significant, noting that it brings a measure of closure to a case that had lingered for nearly two years.
Authorities said the remains have been secured and will undergo forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities.
The army also disclosed that steps are being taken to contact the families of the deceased to facilitate identification and arrange burial rites in line with military tradition.
Officials said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle armed groups and restore stability across the South-East.
They added that the discovery of burial sites within the camp highlights the brutality of the group and reinforces the need for sustained security operations in the region.
Reaffirming its commitment, the army said it would continue to pursue those responsible for attacks on security personnel and civilians, while working to ensure that fallen soldiers are honoured.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely information, as operations continue across the region.
