U.S. warns corrupt Nigerian officials risk visa restrictions

The United States has reiterated that Nigerian officials found to be involved in corruption could face visa bans, underscoring Washington’s commitment to accountability and good governance.

In a statement posted Monday on its official X handle, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria stressed that corruption would not be tolerated, even when committed by high-ranking figures.

“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving U.S. visas,” the Mission said.

Washington has in the past imposed visa restrictions on Nigerian politicians accused of undermining electoral processes and democratic institutions. Officials say the measure is an important tool to promote transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

The Embassy also drew attention to a July 29 report by The Africa Report, which detailed how some state governors allegedly spent billions of naira on constructing or renovating government houses despite worsening economic hardship.

Quoting transparency advocates, the Mission warned that such practices reflected poor fiscal priorities, deepened inequality, and eroded public trust.
