The League of Nigerian Columnists (LNC) has mourned the death of Mr. Dan Agbese, calling the veteran journalist, Newswatch co-founder, and respected columnist a guiding light in Nigerian journalism.
In a statement shared with Business Hallmark by Akogun Tola Adeniyi, convener of the league, the LNC described Agbese as a journalist of integrity whose work exemplified professionalism, intellectual rigour, and dedication to truth.
“Dan Agbese was a steward of public trust and one of Nigeria’s most influential columnists,” the statement said. “He shaped national conversations with calm authority and disciplined judgment, setting a benchmark for generations of writers.”
The league praised Agbese for his courage and measured commentary, noting that he held those in power accountable without theatrics and wrote with honesty and moral clarity. In 2021, he was honoured with the LNC Fellowship, the highest award for a columnist in Nigeria.
“His legacy demonstrates the enduring value of responsible journalism and public service,” the LNC added. “At a time when public discourse is often polarised, Dan Agbese’s example reminds us of the dignity and purpose of the written word.”
The league extended heartfelt condolences to Agbese’s family, colleagues, and admirers, adding: “Nigeria has lost a thoughtful voice, journalism has lost a beacon, and we, as columnists, have lost one of our finest.”
