The Abia State Government has commenced operations of its electric vehicle (EV) mass transit scheme, deploying four buses to provide free intra-city and inter-city transportation in Umuahia and Aba.

The pilot programme began on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, fulfilling a commitment made by Governor Alex Otti during the official handover of the mass transit buses.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said two of the buses have been assigned to Umuahia, while the remaining two are serving commuters in Aba.

In Umuahia, the EV buses are operating on the Isi-Gate–Ubakala and Okpara Square–Express Tower routes. In Aba, the routes cover Osisioma to Park, and Park to Ala-Oji via Port Harcourt Road.

In addition to intra-city services, the state government has also rolled out free inter-city transport, with two daily trips scheduled between Umuahia and Aba, and return journeys to Umuahia.

Each bus is manned by a pilot and a co-pilot, while passengers are transported on a first-come, first-served basis. Commuters have been urged to cooperate with bus operators and observe all guidelines to ensure safety and efficiency.

Describing the initiative as a pilot phase, Prince Kanu said the scheme represents a learning process for all parties involved and may experience initial challenges.

He appealed to residents for patience and support as the government introduces what he described as a new chapter in public transportation within the state.

The EV bus project aligns with the Otti administration’s agenda to enhance urban mobility, ease transportation costs for residents and encourage environmentally friendly transport solutions across Abia State.
