The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the object held by Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, in a viral video was a stun device and not a firearm, as widely speculated.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi, in a statement on Wednesday, said Pastor Adefarasin voluntarily appeared at the command headquarters in Ikeja for questioning after the video, which showed him briefly displaying the object during a sermon, stirred public debate.
“After a thorough investigation, including interrogation and a cautionary statement from Pastor Adefarasin, it was established that the object in question was a stun gun and not a lethal weapon or firearm,” Adebisi said.
The command noted that no law was broken in the incident and announced that the case had been closed. “Consequent to our findings, the Lagos State Police Command has determined that there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued,” it added.
The footage, which trended on social media, had drawn criticism from some Nigerians who questioned the propriety of displaying a weapon-like object during a church service.
While clarifying that stun guns are legal for personal protection in Nigeria, the police acknowledged that their public display could raise unnecessary alarm.
It reiterated its pledge to handle high-profile matters with transparency, while assuring Lagos residents of its commitment to public safety and the rule of law.
