Heavily armed bandits on Wednesday attacked Ibeto town in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, abducting a prominent lawyer, Barrister Isyaku Muhammed Danjuma, along with several residents.
The raid, which took place in the early hours of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, saw gunmen invade the community in large numbers, brandishing sophisticated weapons.
“They came with heavy guns, even bigger than what security operatives use. Their target was prominent people, and that was how they went for Barrister Isyaku. They took him into the bush. The bandits operated for hours without any security presence,” a resident told Business Hallmark.
Tragically, Danjuma himself had moments earlier warned of the attack in a Facebook post: “Independence Day but bandits are here in Ibeto running riot.” Shortly after, he was seized by the attackers.
His associate, Mohd Gbedako Ndatsu, later confirmed the incident, writing under the post: “Please pray for him. I just received the devastating news that he has been kidnapped.”
The incident follows a similar abduction last Friday when Barrister Onyesom Peace Udoka, newly called to the Bar, and her sister were kidnapped on their way home from her Call to Bar ceremony. The duo, seized around Lokoja, Kogi State, on September 27, were released after several days in captivity.
The latest incident highlights the growing vulnerability of professionals to abductions amid Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
