President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned labour activist and human rights advocate, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, who died on Sunday in Ota, Ogun State, after being hit by a vehicle in a tragic hit-and-run incident.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu condoled with the family, friends, and associates of the late activist, describing his death as a major loss to Nigeria’s labour movement and civil society.
The President paid tribute to Aremu’s lifelong commitment to workers’ rights and social justice, noting that he was a fearless advocate for equity and dignity for all.
“Comrade Aremu was a devoted fighter who gave his life to the struggle for workers’ empowerment and the defence of human rights. He was a courageous comrade who stood firm in his beliefs and never wavered in defending the oppressed,” Tinubu said.
He extended his condolences to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and other civil society organisations, acknowledging Aremu’s instrumental role in shaping progressive discourse and activism in Nigeria.
“Aremu was not just a unionist; he was a teacher, an organiser, and the conscience of the people. Through his words and actions, he inspired generations of Nigerians to embrace justice, integrity, and patriotism,” the President added.
Describing the late activist as a selfless patriot and tireless campaigner for the common good, President Tinubu prayed for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family and colleagues.
Comrade Aremu was widely respected across Nigeria’s labour and pro-democracy circles for his unwavering commitment to fairness, good governance, and social transformation.
