The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed the dismissal of Nuhu Usman and other officers implicated in the killing of a Delta-based musician, with a recommendation that they face prosecution for homicide.
The police chief, who spoke to journalists on Wednesday, said the decision followed the outcome of internal disciplinary proceedings which found the officers guilty of breaching rules governing the use of force.
He explained that the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) established that Usman, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, acted in violation of Force Order 237 and other operational procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The investigation clearly showed that the officer acted outside the provisions regulating the use of firearms. No suspicion of wrongdoing justifies the taking of life outside the law,” he said.
Disu disclosed that both the FDC and orderly room trials recommended the immediate dismissal of all officers involved, including other senior personnel and inspectors who were present during the incident.
He added that the affected officers would, upon dismissal, be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges.
According to him, the recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval, in line with constitutional provisions.
The IGP emphasized that the actions of the officers were inconsistent with the ethics and standards of the police, reiterating the force’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Background
The development comes in the wake of public outrage over the killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi, popularly known as OG Millan, during a police operation in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026.
The incident sparked protests, with residents storming the Ekpan Police Station to demand justice, while the victim’s mother alleged that he was the second of her sons to die in encounters involving police officers.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) also condemned the killing, describing it as unconstitutional and calling for the prosecution of all those involved.
A viral video from the scene, which appeared to show the victim restrained and pleading before being shot, has continued to stir public anger and renewed calls for reforms within the police force.
