The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja (formerly University of Abuja), has approved the promotion of 104 academic staff to professorial rank, the largest single elevation in the institution’s history.
The decision was taken at the 78th Extraordinary Meeting of the 11th Council, chaired by Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, held on September 9–10, 2025, at the University’s Main Campus.
A statement by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, confirmed that 58 staff were promoted to the rank of Professor, while 46 others became Associate Professors.
The beneficiaries cut across key disciplines including agriculture, clinical sciences, engineering, social sciences, theatre arts, Islamic studies, statistics, applied mathematics, nursing, and allied health sciences.
Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu (fcvsn), congratulated the newly promoted staff, describing the exercise as a milestone for the institution.
“This promotion is a recognition of your hard work, academic excellence, and commitment to the growth of the University. We expect your new status to inspire greater achievements in teaching, research, mentorship, and community service,” he said.
Adamu stressed that the scale of the promotions reflected the Council and Management’s commitment to rewarding excellence and strengthening the academic base of the university.
“This is particularly remarkable because the number of staff elevated is the highest in the history of this University. It is a great achievement and a credit to the entire University community for prioritising excellence and human capacity development,” he added.
He assured staff that the university would sustain a stable and transparent promotion system designed to motivate lecturers and enhance institutional growth.
“On behalf of the Governing Council and Management, I congratulate you all on this noble achievement,” he said.
