The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old woman, Anulika Onyeanusia, over an alleged case of child pornography in Onitsha, following the circulation of a video purportedly showing the sexual abuse of a minor.
The suspect was arrested on September 10 after police operatives acted on information obtained through open-source intelligence regarding the video.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement on Thursday that four children, aged two, three, six and nine, were also rescued during the operation.
According to him, operatives recovered sex toys and other items considered relevant to the investigation.
Ikenga said the suspect remained in police custody while investigators worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence and determine whether other persons were involved.
He also disclosed that the woman’s husband was being interrogated to establish whether he had any connection with the alleged crime.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji, described the alleged exploitation and abuse of children as unacceptable and directed investigators to conduct a thorough and professional investigation.
Oji also ordered that the rescued children be provided with appropriate care and protection.
“The Command notes that beyond the investigation and prosecution, its priority is the safety, dignity and wellbeing of the rescued children,” Ikenga said.
He added that the police would work with relevant child-protection and support agencies to ensure that the children received necessary care, counselling and other support to aid their recovery.
The Command further assured that the identities and privacy of the children would be protected throughout the process.
It also commended vigilante operatives, bloggers and residents who supplied information that helped the police trace and arrest the suspect.
