In a move that has stirred mixed reactions across the country, a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Kabiru Mai Palace, has announced the renovation of 80 cemeteries across Zamfara State as part of his constituency project.

Mai Palace, who represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Sports, unveiled the project during a ceremony marking his second year in office as a second-term lawmaker.

Addressing constituents at the event on Tuesday, the lawmaker defended the initiative, describing cemeteries as the inevitable final resting place for all humans and a space that deserves dignity and maintenance.

“We have renovated 80 cemeteries across Gusau and Tsafe Local Government Areas to mark my second year in office,” he said. “We observed that many cemeteries in our communities were in deplorable condition.”

“As Muslims, we understand the spiritual importance of maintaining cemeteries. Islam teaches us to keep these places clean and in order, as it helps prevent societal misfortunes and serves as a reminder of our mortality.”

Mai Palace further pledged to engage cemetery guards, pay their allowances, and provide them with working tools to ensure the continued upkeep of the burial grounds.

In addition to the cemetery renovations, the lawmaker also distributed tricycles and motorcycles to empower constituents, highlighting his commitment to both physical infrastructure and economic support within the community.

While some have commended the initiative as a respectful gesture rooted in religious and cultural values, others have questioned the prioritisation of cemetery renovation amid pressing developmental challenges in the state.
