Passengers aboard an Enugu Air flight narrowly escaped death on Thursday after the aircraft crash-landed and veered off the runway while landing at Benin Airport in Edo State.

Despite the frightening incident, all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft without injuries, the airline confirmed.

In a statement issued shortly after the incident, Enugu Air said the aircraft experienced a runway excursion after touchdown, adding that emergency procedures were immediately activated.

"One of our aircraft operating into Benin experienced a runway excursion after landing today.

"We confirm that all passengers and crew have safely disembarked and there were no injuries or casualties," the airline said.

According to the airline, the aircraft has been secured, while the relevant aviation authorities have been notified in line with standard procedures.

It added that investigations and a technical assessment of the aircraft were already underway to determine the cause of the incident.

Enugu Air also warned that the occurrence could disrupt some of its scheduled flights, noting that passengers affected by any changes would be contacted directly and assisted accordingly.

"The safety of our passengers, crew and operations remains our highest priority. We appreciate your understanding and will continue to provide updates through our official communication channels," the statement added.

Although the incident caused anxiety among passengers, the safe evacuation of everyone on board prevented what could have resulted in fatalities.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the runway excursion as part of routine aviation safety procedures.
