Arise TV mourns Somtochukwu Maduagwu, reporter killed in Abuja robbery

The Nigerian media space has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old reporter, producer, and presenter with Arise News Channel, who was killed during a robbery attack at her Katampe residence in Abuja.

Fondly called Sommie by colleagues and friends, Maduagwu was attacked in the early hours of Monday, cutting short a promising career in broadcast journalism.

In a statement confirming the incident, Arise TV described her as “a cherished member of the Arise News family,” noting that her voice, which once informed and inspired viewers, “is now silent but her passion and legacy will endure.” The channel also urged security agencies to ensure a swift investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu trained as a lawyer before venturing into journalism, where she quickly distinguished herself as one of the vibrant young voices on Nigerian television. Her colleagues and managers praised her professionalism, warmth, and commitment to the newsroom.

Her death has once again highlighted Nigeria’s deepening insecurity, with critics questioning the government’s ability to rein in violent crimes that continue to claim lives across the country.

Tributes have since poured in from friends, viewers, and members of the media fraternity, many describing her as a bright star extinguished too soon.
