Commuters travelling from Kaduna to Abuja on Monday morning were left in shock and stranded after two trains collided along one of Nigeria’s busiest rail corridors, sparking panic and raising pressing questions about railway safety.
The Abuja-bound train departed Kaduna as scheduled but ran into trouble near Asham Station when it collided with another train. Passengers described the impact as sudden and violent, throwing many from their seats and causing injuries.
“We were moving normally when suddenly there was a loud bang, and the train braked violently,” one passenger wrote on social media. “At first, nobody knew what had happened, but then we realized we had collided with another train on the same track.”
Eyewitnesses reported cuts, bruises, and minor injuries among passengers. Sada Malumfashi, who was on board, shared his account on X:
“Just dropped from the Kaduna–Abuja train. There was a loud bang, and the train jolted to a stop, flinging people across. Many were hit and bleeding. The train resumed to Kubwa after about 30 minutes, but there was no information from @info_NRC.”
Video footage circulating online showed the damaged fronts of the trains, with one engine partially derailed. Passengers were seen helping one another along the tracks while waiting for emergency responders.
Emergency teams and security personnel were quickly deployed to evacuate passengers and secure the site. While no deaths were reported, the collision has reignited concerns about the safety of Nigeria’s railways, particularly the Kaduna–Abuja line and the effectiveness of its digital signalling systems.
Many passengers expressed frustration at the lack of communication from the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Some were forced to disembark at Kubwa Station and arrange alternative transport to complete their journey to Abuja.
“I take this train regularly because it’s normally safe,” another passenger said. “Today everyone was terrified. People were calling their families and checking on each other.”
The Kaduna–Abuja corridor is heavily relied upon by commuters who prefer rail travel to the often-dangerous highways. Monday’s collision has underscored the urgent need for operational safety improvements, timely communication, and rigorous maintenance along the route.
Railway experts suggest that collisions of this nature often point to either a breakdown in communication between train operators and the control centre or a failure in the automated signalling system. The NRC has yet to provide an official statement on the cause or confirm the number of injured passengers.
This incident adds to a series of operational setbacks on the route, prompting calls from safety advocates and commuters for stricter adherence to safety protocols and improved monitoring of rail infrastructure.
For those on board, the experience was both frightening and chaotic, highlighting the human cost when safety systems fail.
“We are thankful there were no fatalities,” a passenger said. “But such incidents cannot happen again. Passenger safety must be the top priority on every journey.”
As authorities investigate the cause of Monday’s collision, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance, effective signalling, and better crisis management on Nigeria’s railway network.
