Kano transport commissioner resigns over drug suspect bail scandal

Kano State Commissioner for Transportation, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, has tendered his resignation following the submission of a probe panel report linking him to the controversial bail of an alleged drug baron, Sulaiman Danwawu.

Namadi stepped down on Wednesday, just hours after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf received the report of the investigative committee constituted to examine the matter.

The resignation was announced in a statement issued by the Director General, Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

In the statement, Namadi said he resigned in the public interest and due to the sensitive nature of the allegations.

“As a member of an administration that has been vocal and active in the fight against illicit drug sales and abuse, I feel compelled to take this step, however painful,” he said.

“While I maintain my innocence, I cannot disregard the power of public perception and the importance of safeguarding the integrity of our shared values.”

Namadi expressed gratitude to Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of good governance and responsible leadership.

“I remain loyal to the ideals that brought this administration into office and will continue to uphold the trust and vision we have collectively worked to establish in our dear state,” he added.

Governor Yusuf has accepted the resignation, according to the statement, and wished the former commissioner well in his future endeavours.

The governor also restated his commitment to justice, discipline, and the ongoing fight against drug-related crimes and social vices, particularly those affecting the youth.

He further advised political appointees to exercise caution on sensitive issues and to always seek clearance from appropriate authorities before making decisions that impact public interest.

Namadi’s resignation followed the submission of a report by a fact-finding committee set up to probe his alleged role in securing bail for Danwawu, a suspected drug trafficker.

Presenting the report to the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, earlier in the week, the committee chairman and Special Adviser to the Governor on Justice and Constitutional Matters, Aminu Hussain, said the panel conducted a thorough and impartial investigation.

According to the report, the commissioner was found culpable for acting negligently by volunteering to stand as surety for Danwawu without proper scrutiny or due diligence.
