The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, for allegedly parading himself as the “Obi of Lagos.”

Azubike, an indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, was picked up alongside three alleged accomplices, including Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41), while attempting to stage an unveiling ceremony.

According to a police statement posted on X.com on Wednesday, the suspects had planned to unveil a prototype of a purported N1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin. Security operatives sealed off the venue to prevent what the police described as an unlawful event.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh said tactical teams, including the Eko Strike Force, were deployed to the location to maintain law and order. He confirmed that the suspects are being held at the command headquarters in Ikeja and would be charged to court after investigations.

Jimoh warned residents to beware of impostors exploiting cultural and traditional institutions, stressing that such actions are illegal and could trigger public unrest.

This is not the first time police in Lagos have clamped down on individuals accused of assuming unauthorised titles. In April 2023, Frederick Nwajagu, the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, was similarly arrested for unlawfully parading himself as a community chief.
