An Arik Air flight heading to Port Harcourt from Lagos was on Wednesday diverted to Benin Airport after the crew detected an unusual sound from the aircraft’s left engine.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued in Lagos by the airline’s Public Relations and Communications Manager, Mr Adebanji Ola.
The airline said the Boeing 737-700 aircraft, with registration number 5N-MJF, was already descending for landing in Port Harcourt when the operating crew heard a loud noise from the left engine and immediately initiated diversion procedures in line with established safety protocols.
All 80 passengers on board disembarked safely at Benin Airport without any injuries.
Arik Air stated that arrangements were promptly made to transport the affected passengers to their intended destination.
“The airline apologises to passengers for the inconvenience caused. The safety and well-being of our passengers remain our top priority,” the statement read.
The airline added that further details regarding the cause of the engine anomaly would be provided after necessary technical assessments are concluded.
