Nurse killed by ‘one chance’ robbers in Abuja; another woman found dead

Abuja has been rocked by two violent deaths, raising serious concerns about security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, was found dead on the roadside after finishing her shift on January 3, 2026. Reports indicate she was attacked by suspected “one chance” robbers - criminals who lure unsuspecting passengers into commercial vehicles to commit robbery.

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), FCT Council, condemned the killing, calling it “tragic and inhumane.” In a statement, Chairman Jama D. Medan urged the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to conduct a prompt and transparent investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“The lives of nurses are no longer safe. Many leave home daily to save lives without assurance of returning alive,” the statement said, urging the FCT government to strengthen security around hospitals and major commuting routes and to provide safe transportation for healthcare workers.

The Elegant Nurses Forum also expressed outrage, condemning the worsening insecurity and demanding that health workers be formally recognised as high-risk employees, with visible security measures implemented along routes commonly used by nurses.

Tragically, another woman, Princess Chigbo Mediari, a staff member of an FCT parastatal, was found dead in central Abuja on the same day. Her death, like that of Nurse Chuwumeziem, has raised fears of a possible serial attacker or a surge in violent crimes targeting commuters.

Authorities, including the FCT Police Command, have confirmed they are investigating both cases. The incidents have renewed calls for urgent government action to protect frontline workers and residents across the FCT.
