Amnesty International has criticised the handling of Democracy Day protesters in Abuja, alleging that security operatives used excessive force against demonstrators and calling for an independent investigation into the incident involving activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement issued on Friday, the human rights organisation expressed concern over reports that Sowore collapsed after security personnel allegedly fired teargas at protesters gathered at the Unity Fountain in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to Amnesty International, Sowore was later taken to a hospital for medical attention following the incident.

The organisation described the action against protesters as an attack on the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, insisting that citizens should be allowed to express their views without intimidation or violence.

Amnesty further argued that any attempt to target individuals for participating in peaceful demonstrations constitutes a violation of fundamental human rights and democratic principles.

“The targeting of activists solely for exercising their right to peaceful assembly is unlawful and undermines the rule of law,” the organisation stated.

The rights group also accused the authorities of failing to uphold constitutional guarantees and international human rights obligations, alleging a growing pattern of restrictions on civic freedoms.

The incident reportedly occurred during a Democracy Day protest in Abuja, where demonstrators had gathered to draw attention to issues including insecurity, economic hardship and the rising cost of living.

Eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed scenes of confusion as protesters attempted to assist Sowore after he reportedly collapsed during the confrontation with security operatives.

The demonstration formed part of a broader nationwide protest organised by a coalition of civil society organisations, labour activists, youth groups and pro-democracy movements to mark June 12 and demand action on pressing national challenges.

Amnesty International called on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure accountability for any violations of the rights of peaceful protesters.
