The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria has intensified calls for a thorough investigation into the death of 26-year-old physiotherapist, Mary Habila, insisting that only an independent forensic examination can establish the true circumstances surrounding her demise.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the group expressed concern over the incident and urged security agencies to conduct what it described as a transparent and credible investigation capable of earning public trust.

Habila, a staff member of the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences who was serving on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works, died under circumstances that remain the subject of police investigation.

National President of the council, Isah Abubakar, said the organisation was troubled by reports surrounding the young healthcare professional’s death and called for an independent autopsy to scientifically determine its cause.

According to him, the investigation must be conducted without interference and in a manner that guarantees accountability.

The youth body acknowledged public comments by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, supporting an autopsy but maintained that the process should be handled independently to avoid any perception of bias.

It also urged the Nigeria Police Force to leave no stone unturned in its investigation and ensure that any individual found culpable is brought before the law.

Beyond demanding a forensic examination, the council called for the minister’s suspension while investigations are ongoing, arguing that such a step would strengthen public confidence in the process.

The group further warned that it could embark on nationwide protests in collaboration with civil society organisations if authorities fail to meet its demands within seven days.

According to the council, justice for the deceased and transparency in the investigation are non-negotiable.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts by law enforcement authorities to unravel the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.

Earlier this week, legal representatives of Umahi formally requested the Ebonyi State Police Command to ensure that a comprehensive forensic autopsy is carried out before the deceased’s remains are released for burial.

In a letter to the Commissioner of Police, the lawyers argued that a scientific examination would help establish the exact cause of death and preserve the integrity of the investigation.

They also clarified that Habila was lodged in accommodation designated for staff and associates rather than in the minister’s personal residence.

According to the legal team, only Habila and another occupant, Anita Baaki, were present in the building on the night of the incident.

The lawyers urged the police to engage qualified forensic specialists and delay the release of the body until all relevant examinations and investigative procedures have been completed.

They maintained that such measures would help preserve critical evidence, minimise speculation and ensure that any conclusions reached are based on verifiable facts.

Police authorities in Ebonyi State have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and have indicated that an autopsy remains a key component of efforts to determine the cause of death.

No official findings have been released so far.
