Lagos to Arraign 52 Suspected Street Urchins, Pickpockets

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to arraign 52 individuals arrested during a weekend operation targeting street urchins, miscreants, pickpockets, and other suspected criminals across key parts of the city.

The suspects were apprehended by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit during a routine enforcement and clean-up exercise led by the agency’s Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s spokesperson, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the crackdown followed numerous public complaints and distress calls concerning the growing presence of criminal elements in public spaces.

The operation, which took place on Saturday, spanned several high-traffic areas including Lekki, Ikoyi, Falomo Bridge, Eko Hotel, and Ligali Ayorinde.

“A total of 52 suspects, comprising 51 males and one female, were apprehended during the operation,” the statement said. “All suspects arrested will be charged to court accordingly.”

The task force reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, warning those who engage in activities that threaten public safety to desist immediately.

CSP Akerele disclosed that the task force would continue its bi-weekly enforcement operations to ensure the city remains safe for law-abiding residents and businesses.

“In a determined effort to rid the metropolis of environmental infractions and criminal elements, we will not relent in enhancing public safety across the state,” the statement concluded.
