The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a holiday programme offering undocumented migrants, including those from Nigeria, $3,000 and a free flight home if they voluntarily leave the country before year-end.

Under the initiative, known as Project Homecoming, migrants who register through the CBP Home app will also qualify for forgiveness of any outstanding civil fines or penalties linked to overstaying in the US. The programme was initially launched in May 2025 under a presidential proclamation by former President Donald Trump.

DHS reports that 1.9 million undocumented migrants have voluntarily departed the US since January 2025, with tens of thousands using the CBP Home platform. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the holiday offer temporarily increases the incentive from $1,000 to $3,000.

“During the Christmas season, the US taxpayer is generously tripling the incentive for voluntary departure, offering a $3,000 exit bonus until the end of the year,” Noem said. She warned that migrants who ignore the programme could face arrest, deportation, and permanent bans from re-entering the US.

The programme, funded through $250 million reallocated from refugee resettlement funds, provides a fast, cost-free process via the app, which handles all travel logistics for participants.

DHS emphasised that migrants who refuse to participate risk tougher enforcement measures, while those who comply can leave safely with the financial incentive and travel arrangements fully provided.
