President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the passing of renowned Nigerian evangelist, Dr Uma Ukpai, describing him as a “pillar of faith,” a “firebrand preacher,” and “a builder of men” whose ministry profoundly shaped lives across Nigeria and beyond.
In a condolence message released on Monday from the State House, Abuja, the President said Dr Ukpai devoted his life to spreading the gospel, promoting unity, and championing the values of love, peace, and service to humanity.
“With a heavy heart, I mourn the passing of one of God’s generals, Dr Uma Ukpai,” President Tinubu said. “Reverend Ukpai was not just another preacher; he was an anointed crusader of the faith, filled with fire and ice for the gospel and restoring humanity to discipline, love, and good neighbourliness.”
The President recalled the evangelist’s immense contribution to the Christian revival movement that swept across Nigeria in the 1980s, citing his Greater Ibadan for Christ Crusade in 1982 and Greater Lagos for Christ Crusade in 1985 as transformative moments that strengthened the country’s moral and spiritual foundation.
Tinubu lauded Dr Ukpai’s vision for peace and interfaith unity, noting that his ministry transcended denominational and ethnic boundaries. “He was a builder of bridges connecting people of different faiths, tribes, and tongues. His message was one of reconciliation and hope,” he said.
Beyond his evangelical work, the President highlighted the late cleric’s deep humanitarian commitment, particularly through the establishment of schools, hospitals, and charitable foundations that catered to the needs of the underprivileged.
“Dr Ukpai’s mission was clearly to unite the Christian fold and promote peace and harmony. He built men, raised leaders, and devoted his entire life to serving God and humanity,” the statement added.
President Tinubu described the founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association and co-founder of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) as a man of unwavering faith who lived a life of purpose and fulfilled his divine calling.
“Dr Ukpai has fulfilled his divine mission and has gone to be with the Lord. He fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith,” Tinubu said.
The President extended his condolences to Dr Ukpai’s widow, Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, his children, and members of his ministry, praying for God’s comfort and strength for them in this time of grief.
Born in Asaga, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Dr Uma Ukpai, who died at 80, was celebrated across Nigeria and Africa for his impactful crusades, message of faith, and tireless efforts to promote moral revival and national unity.
