A school excursion ended in tragedy in Uganda after a bus carrying pupils overturned, killing 21 people, including 20 children, police said on Friday.
The accident occurred as pupils of King David Junior School in Kampala were returning from a visit to Sipi Falls, a popular tourist destination in Kapchorwa District in eastern Uganda.
According to a police statement, preliminary findings suggest that the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to leave the road, crash into a large stone and overturn.
Authorities said the crash claimed the lives of 20 pupils and one adult male at the scene, while several other passengers suffered injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Police said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Photographs released by authorities showed the bus lying on its side with severe damage, illustrating the force of the impact.
The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns in Uganda, where fatal crashes involving buses and other commercial vehicles remain frequent.
Road accidents are a major challenge in the East African nation, with poor road infrastructure, reckless driving and vehicle defects often blamed for the high number of fatalities.
In one of the country's deadliest recent accidents, at least 46 people were killed in October when two buses collided along a major highway.
Official statistics indicate that Uganda recorded 4,434 fatal road crashes in 2024, resulting in 5,144 deaths, highlighting the scale of the road safety crisis facing the country.
