Kwara State was plunged into further fear on Wednesday as armed men abducted four rice farmers in Bokungi village, Edu Local Government Area, barely a day after terrorists attacked a church in Eruku, killing three worshippers and kidnapping several others.
The latest incident occurred in the evening, during peak harvest hours. Local sources told SaharaReporters that the farmers were suddenly surrounded while collecting harvested rice on their fields.
“It has been confirmed that bandits struck again at Bokungi under the Lafiagi Emirate. Four people were abducted. Information is still emerging,” one source said.
Residents described how the attackers moved with ease, herding the farmers into the bush before fleeing in an unknown direction. The repeated assaults have forced many farming settlements in Edu LGA to be abandoned, as locals fear further attacks during the harvest period.
The fresh kidnappings follow Tuesday night’s brutal attack in Eruku, Ekiti LGA, where terrorists stormed a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) branch. Witnesses said the assailants opened fire on worshippers, killing three people instantly, and then seized an unspecified number of attendees, including the pastor.
“The gunmen came in suddenly and started shooting. Three people were killed instantly,” a source said. “They gathered others at gunpoint and took them into the bush. We still don’t know how many.”
The attackers reportedly escaped through bush paths connecting Eruku to neighbouring villages, leaving residents terrified and uncertain as the wave of violence spreads across Kwara State.
As of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the Bokungi abduction.
